This beach is home to the nests of three of the seven species of sea turtles in the world: the leatherback, olive ridley, and hawksbills black. All three of these species have been declared endangered.

The protection of these sea turtles´ precious natural environment—a non-developed beach—is an ongoing project. Bright lights and noise can cause the turtles to turn back to the sea before laying their eggs. That is why we ask that you wear dark clothing and refrain from the use of cameras.

Cerro Tortuguero

Tortuguero Mountain is the remains of an ancient volcano, and the reason that our beaches are black volcanic sand. A short boat ride starts the tour. As with any tour down the Turtle Beach Lodge private canal and the Canal of Palms mystery and beauty abound. The climb up the mountain is strenuous. Your guide will go at a pace that accommodates the whole group. Along the trail he will point out and explain about many plants and animals that you might otherwise miss. At the first stop near the top of the mountain you will be able to see the island where the town of Tortuguero is located.

The Tortuguero River and the Caribbean Sea that surround the island can be seen far below. There are often groups of monkeys and many kinds of birds near the top of the mountain. At the very top of the mountain you will have an interesting perspective of the jungle canals in panorama below you. Be very careful to stay on the narrow path. The drop off is steep on both sides. Another lively ride full of exciting conversation and laughter brings you back to the lodge, where further adventures await you.

Cacao & Chocolate Experience

Enjoy the garden with cacao trees and other related plants, learning about cacao tree natural history. The artisanal process of harvesting, fermenting and drying the cacao beans. It is a trip back in time to the ancient cultures of the Mayas, Aztecs and other Central American people, where cacao was used as a ceremonial beverage and as currency. It is a tour full of Colonial and Caribbean pirate stories, aromas and degustation of the “food of the gods” bean-to-cup and bean-to-bar.

You will be “hands on” tasting the cacao fruit, roasting the beans, separating the husk, grinding the roasted beans on the “metate” (table stone) the indigenous way, savoring the indigenous and colonial chocolate beverage and the artisanal chocolate bars.
